  • 本文介绍了哥特一族的起源、发展、影响和特征等,并选取了一些媒体对哥特一族的打扮的相关报道来揭示社会各方面对哥特一族的看法。

Origins• Developed in England during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre• Imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from the 19th century Gothic literature, as well as horror films.

Origins• The date of origin is usually placed in 1979 when Bauhaus released the song "Bela Lugosis Dead." The band originally intended the song to be tongue-in-cheek; however, many young fans latched onto this mysterious, eerie sound as inspiration for the budding gothic subculture. The first generation of the gothic movement emerged mostly in the UK.• Bands like The Damned, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees characterize the first generation. These bands were called Gothic later on, but most did not consider themselves Gothic at the time. There is a great deal of uncertainty about who coined the term "gothic" and how it got attached to this dark music. The British music press seems to be most responsible for making the label stick.

Development• As the second generation now ages into their mid to late 20s, they usually become less interested in participating in the gothic social scene. A distinct third generation emerged in the late 90s to shape the future progression of the gothic movement. The third generation represents an explosion in the number of people referring to themselves as gothic. Many of them have learned about gothic culture because of the present widespread commercial availability.• The huge popularity of "shock rock" act Marilyn Manson has thrown the spotlight onto this subculture. Marilyn Manson is far more similar to the heavy metal theatricality of Alice Cooper than the mysterious desolation of Bauhaus. Many Goths wish to disassociate themselves from the younger, over-ardent followers of Manson who seem to dress and act like him purely for rebellious shock value. The term often used for these youths is "spooky kids."

Development• First and second generation Goths look suspiciously upon the new generation, doubting their authenticity and disliking the exposure they give to a subculture which would prefer to remain underground.• The new generation is not presently well received by their elders, but time may prove otherwise. It would be difficult to predict what the future holds for the Gothic movement.• After over 20 years, it continues to change, grow, mutate and adapt, making it one of the longest surviving youth subcultures in existence.

Influences• The most popular gothic male icon was Dracula, made famous through horror movies. Another popular goth icon, Robert Smith - lead singer from The Cure, will deny that he had any influence on how gothic fashion for guys started. Roberts wild hair, pale white complexion and smudged lipstick as well as his trademark black trench coat image was idolized by many goth guys.

Influences• Another huge influence was the band Bauhaus who pretty much designed the first goth look for guys through their music, clothing, art and style. Another model was Dave Vanian of The Damned who liked to dress as a vampire just for kicks. A continued icon influence is David Bowie who has always walked on the side of eerie through his on screen characters and music.

Fashion• Gothic subculture fashion is based on expression of individuality and personal style

Fashion• The traditional colour of gothic clothing is black, but there are many colours that are secondary favourites within the gothic subcultures. For example, the romantic Goth typically wears black, dark blue, deep purple and blood red.

      In the Media

In the Media• “This year, Goths have been a popular subject for irresponsible members of the media. Thanks to daytime talk shows and Marilyn Manson, the average "Goth" has been misrepresented and twisted into some devil worshipping, blood drinking, parent killing moron. I know people who have tried to explain the truth to the media, but to no avail. Lets face it: a story about kids that happen to like music that parents would describe as "they sound constipated" but really dont do anything outrageous will not sell as well as one about "the cult of Goth!” - www.inmusicwetrust.com

In the Media• “Unfortunately, a large amount of power is in the hands of journalists that are irresponsible at best. A vast majority of reporters dont check their facts as well as they could, and they report what sounds right to them at the moment. MTV started a lot of this when Marilyn Manson was put into heavy rotation […] Now Goths and Mansonites are The SAME according to fashion magazines, newspapers and even Spin magazine (who recently did the ugliest and most horrific fashion spread on "goth" ever). All Im going to say is, Marilyn Manson is not goth. Good or bad? Thats up to you. But ask any person who has been into goth music for more than three years and they will tell you that Manson is, without a doubt, not gothic.” - www.inmusicwetrust.com

In the MediaSalt Lake TribuneApril 11, 1997 For Goths, Everyday Is Halloween 2 boys face charges today in pals deathWearing black clothing, white face-paint and black lipstick is mere play-acting for most members of the subculture called Gothdom. "Every day isHalloween for a Goth," said Diana, a Gothic-Punk follower drawn to themovement by the dress, music and "the romance of death." Local cultexpert Rand Johnson, a West Jordan police captain, said every high schoolin Salt Lake Valley boasts a few Goths. Most are harmless, but a few canbecome a danger to themselves and others. "The Goths are fascinatedwith the darker side of life -- with the grotesque, the mysterious, thedesolate," Johnson said. "There is a fascination with graveyards, death andmoody music.“Today, two boys -- ages 14 and 15 -- are expected to be charged in 3rdDistrict Juvenile Court in the death of Jens Martin Dietz, 14. The WestValley City boy died of diabetic shock March 10 at a Goth party. His friendsdid not call police or tell an adult he was sick. Prosecutors declined torelease the defendants names or nature of the charges.

In the MediaDietz became ill during a four-day party that included smoking marijuanaand taking LSD. When Dietz became unconscious, the partyers draggedhim outside to a garage. He died in the back seat of a disabled car. WestValley City police said the partyers performed several rituals after Dietzdied, including a howling rite meant to open portals to the spirit world. They then discussed dismemberment and burial to get rid of the body, police said. The teens did not report his death until the next day. At theboys funeral, a youth dropped a pentagram, symbolic of Satan, into thecoffin. [The pentagram is also a popular pagan symbol representing thefour elements -- earth, air, fire and water -- and the spirit.] Pattersonbelieves the Goths may have let her son to die so they could perform aritual to gain power. […]Some Goths cut themselves in ceremonies called "drainings," in whichothers drink the "drainees" blood. The ritual is supposed to "reconstitutetheir internal organs" and assist in gaining immortality, Johnson said. "Ivehad kids in my office saying they let blood all the time," he said. "Onemother of a 15-year-old boy said he has come home weak from bloodloss." [This is not a standard Gothic practice, it is probably morecharacteristic of Experimental and Theatrical Satanists or someone who isobsessed with vampires.]

In the MediaThis year, for the first time, Gothdom was a featured subject at the UtahGang Conference workshop in Salt Lake City. Agent Lee Perry of the UtahDivision of Investigations said Goths have been connected todaytime drug-related home burglaries, and male Goths arerumored to have had sex with young girls as part of initiationrites. Said West Valley City Det. Brian Shields: "The Goths are aboutfour things: Drugs and sex, sex and drugs. This is a movementthat needs to be watched." [This is simply ridiculous. There are noinitiation rites, and while some people are about "sex and drugs," itsdefinitely not all of the Gothic movement.] Diana, 19, who got intoGothdom at the age of 16, knows of Goths who file their teeth into fangsand spend their nights haunting cemeteries. But she views most Goths asintellectuals who play chess and engage in long, philosophical discussions." It’s not a trend, it’s not a phase -- it’s been around a long time," she said." It won’t go away like bell-bottom pants." For more articles:www.gothicsubculture.com/news-titles.php

In the Media The American actress said she was a “goth kid” with purple hair and black make-up as a youngster, which led to her being persecuted by her high school peers. The 36-year-old, who shot to fame as Joan Holloway in the US television drama Mad Men, claimed classmates often spat on her in the corridor. She likened her school days to the plot of the William Golding novel Lord of the Flies, saying she was made to feel “ugly, awkward and horrible”. It was not until after she left school that Hendricks began to gain confidence in her appearance and started modelling. Hendricks told the Daily Mirror: “My school days were pretty unhappy. I had the worst high school experience ever. I went to a very mean school and was bullied like crazy.

In the Media “I was a bit of a goth with purple hair and I was also part of the drama group, so my friends and I were all weird theatre people and everyone just hated us. “Moving as a teenager is never easy. So I tried to set myself apart and it ended up with multicoloured hair. It was how I was expressing myself. “I was a goth kid. I dyed my hair about 42 different colours, shaved it at the back and wore black make-up. Kids can be pretty judgmental about people who are different. "But instead of breaking down and conforming, I stood firm. That is also probably why I was unhappy. “My mother was mortified and kept telling me how horrible and ugly I looked. Strangers would walk by with a look of shock on their face, so I never felt pretty. I just always felt awkward."

In the MediaFrom an article that appeared on www.nando.net, written by by Jaxon VanDerbeken of the Rocky Mountain News:"LAKEWOOD, Colo. (August 15, 1997 00:16 a.m. EDT) -- A man with kitchen knivessticking out of his chest and back managed to call 911 to report that his 14-year-old son had just attacked him […] His son David, and the boys 15-year-oldgirlfriend -- followers of the occult known as "gothics" -- were arrested aboutan hour after the attack Wednesday night."According to this, "gothic" is a religion of some sort, since thats what the use ofthe word "occult" would suggest, though the sentence really doesnt make all thatmuch sense, since it appears to be a misuse of the word occult. "He said the boysbedroom had satanic symbols carved everywhere and that it appears he is adevotee of Marilyn Manson, whose music suggests occult overtones."The thing of this is, there is little mention of the fact that the kid must have hadsome serious problems for him to do this. Dyed hair and dark nails really dontimply murder- its the old scapegoat. Dont understand why someone didsomething? Blame it on something else that you dont understand.- www.inmusicwetrust.com

In the Media“Goth is a deplorable type of heathen culture that glorifies everything thatis vile and unholy.”“Goth causes teenage girls to become whores, depresses kids to the pointof cutting themselves, and turns otherwise normal kids into Columbineshooters. The Goth culture is obsessed with death and the darker side oflife, which is clearly evidenced in Goth music. Goth is of the Devil.”“Goth is a degenerate form of subculture, that brings with it hate, loneliness, heartache, and woe. It is sin-centered music (if you dare call itmusic). If you are a parent, please steer your teens away from thisperverted culture of death and hatred. If your daughter comes home fromschool one day with dark mascara around her eyes, and wearing blackclothing, shes being influenced by the wrong crowd at school. Be aparent! Put your foot down! ”- “Goth will Destroy Your Child” by David J. Stewart
